Hurricane and Storm Prep in Onslow County: What Your Policy Pays and What It Leaves Out

Posted June 17, 2025 · Updated September 21, 2026 · Richard Kolstad, CLCS, TRA · Licensed NC and SC

Written from the desk of an independent, veteran-owned agency in Jacksonville that has been placing coastal and Camp Lejeune coverage since 2017. Richard Kolstad, CLCS, TRA. Licensed in North Carolina (1000568335) and South Carolina (3000599432).

A national weather checklist treats a freeze in Ohio and a hurricane in Onslow County as the same event. They are not. Here the costs that empty a savings account are a named-storm deductible written as a percentage of the house, flood water the homeowners policy will not touch, and a generator running too close to a window after the power dies.

This is the prep list we give neighbors in Jacksonville, Richlands, Sneads Ferry, and the communities around Camp Lejeune. It is built around what the policies actually do.

Key takeaways

  • A standard homeowners policy in Onslow County usually covers wind, and rain that comes in through storm damage. It does not cover rising water, storm surge, or a creek over its banks.
  • The number that decides what you pay after a named storm is often a percentage of Coverage A, not the flat deductible you used inland.
  • Flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program generally carries a 30-day wait after the premium is received. Buy it while the map is quiet.
  • Jacksonville Connect and ReadyNC are the local alert systems worth being on. Jacksonville Commons Middle School is the county's pet-friendly shelter when shelters open, and you stay with the pet.
  • Generators belong outside and away from windows and vents. Carbon monoxide after a storm is a real local risk, not a footnote.

Two deductibles sit on most coastal homeowners forms. One is a flat dollar amount for fire, theft, and everyday claims. The other is a percentage for wind, named storm, or wind and hail.

That percentage applies to your dwelling limit, the Coverage A figure on the declarations page. Here is what it works out to:

Coverage A (dwelling limit)2% deductible5% deductible
$250,000$5,000$12,500
$300,000$6,000$15,000
$400,000$8,000$20,000
$500,000$10,000$25,000

That is the number to know in June, not the morning after landfall.

The wording controls the trigger. Some forms say named storm. Others say wind and hail and can apply whether the storm is named or not. Some Onslow County homes carry wind separately through the North Carolina Coastal Property Insurance Pool when standard markets will not write the risk.

We wrote the math out in full here: Wind Deductible Jacksonville NC. The coverage itself is on our wind and hail page.

Flood is a different contract

Storm surge, the New River over its banks, and standing water after days of rain are flood. A homeowners policy does not pay those losses. Flood coverage is a separate policy through the NFIP or a private carrier, split into building and contents. Renters can buy contents-only.

A flood zone tells a lender what to require. It does not tell you whether your street can flood. Plenty of Onslow County losses happen outside the mapped high-risk zones.

The federal program generally waits 30 days after premium is received before a new policy takes effect. Closing on a mortgage is a common exception. Carriers also restrict binding new flood coverage when a storm is already aimed at the coast. Waiting for the forecast is how households miss that storm.

What to do while the weather is still quiet

Sign up for Jacksonville Connect. It is the city's free alert system for hurricanes, outages, and water issues, delivered by call, text, or email. Statewide, ReadyNC.gov carries the checklist Onslow County Emergency Management points people to, and Know Your Zone at knowyourzone.nc.gov has the evacuation zone map.

Photograph every room, the roof, the HVAC, and the serial plates on big appliances. Store the photos off-site or in the cloud. After a storm, that file is how you prove what was there.

If you are PCSing in or out around hurricane season, line the effective dates up before pack-out. A gap between policies is how households lose a claim they thought they had. The PCS insurance checklist covers the rest of that list.

After the power dies

Run a generator outdoors, dry, and away from air intakes. That is not optional. Every storm season, people are hurt or killed by carbon monoxide because a generator sat in a garage or under a window.

Do not use a grill, camp stove, or oven for indoor heat. Put working CO alarms on every level, especially if the house has a gas appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage. Placement and the North Carolina rental rules are in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Onslow County.

A homeowners policy does not pay a CO medical bill because a generator was placed wrong. It also does not turn a flood loss into a wind claim because the generator was the only thing still running.

What the policy will and will not do

Covered wind damage to the roof, siding, and interior from rain that entered through that damage is typically a homeowners or wind claim, subject to the named-storm deductible.

Rising water is not.

Additional living expenses can help if a covered loss makes the house unlivable. Evacuation hotel nights ahead of a storm, with no covered damage, usually are not. Flood policies generally do not pay living expenses the way a homeowners form can.

Trees that fall on the house after a storm are a common Onslow claim. Whether that is covered depends on the cause and the form. The declarations page and the claim notes decide it, not a blog post.

Common questions

Do I need flood insurance if I am not in a high-risk zone?

A flood zone tells a lender what to require, not what the weather does. Whether to carry it is a judgment about your own street. That conversation belongs on the calendar before a cone is on the map.

Will my homeowners policy pay for a hotel if we evacuate?

Usually only if a covered loss made the house unlivable. Leaving ahead of the storm, with the house intact, is generally on you.

When should I buy flood coverage?

While the tropics are quiet. The NFIP 30-day wait and storm-binding restrictions are why people who wait for the forecast end up uninsured for that storm.

Where do I get local alerts in Onslow County?

Jacksonville Connect for city messages. ReadyNC and Know Your Zone for statewide evacuation and flood-zone guidance. Onslow County Emergency Management posts shelter openings when they happen.

Is there a pet-friendly shelter?

Jacksonville Commons Middle School is the county's designated pet-friendly shelter. You stay at the shelter with the pet and bring its supplies. You cannot drop the animal off and leave.
