Independent vs captive.
What is the main difference between an independent insurance agent and a captive insurance agent?
A captive (or exclusive) agent represents one insurance company and can offer that company's policies. An independent agent is appointed with more than one carrier and can place the same account with different companies. The difference is who the agent can represent, not a promise about price. Kolstad is independent; the carriers still write the policies and still decide the claims.
Can an independent insurance agent get me better rates than a captive agent who works for one company?
An independent agent can show you more than one company's price for the same risk. That is access, not a promise the number will be lower. Sometimes the captive's company is the one that wants the account; sometimes it is not, and a single quote would never show you that. We compare the carriers we represent and tell you what each one covers.
