Good questions
North Carolina auto insurance, answered.
What is the minimum auto insurance coverage in North Carolina?
Since July 1, 2025 the minimums are $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury liability, and $50,000 for property damage. Underinsured motorist coverage is also required on policies. The previous minimums were $30,000 / $60,000 / $25,000, so a policy that has not been reviewed since mid-2025 is worth checking.
What car insurance is required in NC?
Liability coverage at the state minimums is required to register and keep a plate on a vehicle, along with uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Collision and comprehensive are not state requirements, but a lender or lessor will require them for as long as there is a loan on the car.
Why is car insurance so expensive in North Carolina?
Several things stack. Repair and medical costs have risen faster than general inflation, the state's minimum limits went up in 2025 which raises the floor for every policy, and the Safe Driver Incentive Plan surcharges at-fault accidents and convictions for years after they happen. Where you garage the car matters too. What we can do is shop the same driver across multiple carriers, since the spread between them on identical coverage is often wider than people expect.
How much is car insurance in NC?
It depends on your driving record, the vehicle, where it is garaged, your annual mileage, the limits and deductibles you choose, and how long you have been continuously insured. We do not quote from averages because the average is not a policy. Send us your current declarations page and we will price the same coverage properly.
How do I get car insurance in NC?
You need the vehicle identification number, the names and license numbers of every driver in the household, and the garaging address. If you are registering the car in North Carolina, your insurer files the DMV proof of coverage; keep the policy continuous, because a lapse is reported and carries penalties and plate consequences. Call or text 910-378-1378 and we can usually have coverage in force the same day.
How much is non owners insurance in NC?
Non-owner policies give you liability coverage when you drive a car you do not own, most often to keep coverage continuous or to satisfy a filing requirement. Pricing depends on your record and the limits you need. It is a narrow product: it follows you rather than a vehicle, and it does not cover damage to the car you are driving. Call us and we will tell you quickly whether it is the right fit or whether you actually need a standard policy.
Can you have a driver's license without insurance in NC?
You can hold a license without insurance if you do not own a registered vehicle, since the insurance requirement attaches to the registration rather than the license. If you do own a registered vehicle in North Carolina, it has to carry liability coverage, and letting it lapse while the plate is active is what triggers DMV penalties.
Does my auto insurance change when I PCS to or from Camp Lejeune?
It usually should. Auto rates are based on where the vehicle is garaged, so the address change matters even if the registration does not move. Tell us your report date and we will handle the timing so coverage stays continuous through the move, which also protects the rate you get on the other side.
What is gap coverage and do I need it?
If your car is totaled, the policy pays what it was worth, not what you still owe. Gap covers the difference. On a financed vehicle in the first few years, or on a lease, that difference can be substantial. If you put little or nothing down, it is worth asking about before you need it.
